The Listener appoints new Editor

Almost a year after its relaunch, New Zealand Listener has appointed a new Editor, Karyn Scherer who takes up the position on August 9.

A multi award-winning journalist, Scherer’s CV spans more than 30 years, including many years as a political and business reporter. Her previous roles include founding editor of NZME’s The Business, investigations editor and senior reporter at National Business Review, and editor of the Daily Post. She has also worked in the public sector, including the Financial Markets Authority and Callaghan Innovation.

A former deputy editor of the NZ Listener, Scherer is thrilled to be returning to the influential magazine and is looking forward to maintaining, enhancing and evolving its high-quality journalism. Scherer will also be an integral part of launching a new digital platform for the brand in the coming months.

“The successful relaunch of NZ Listener under Are Media is testament to the fact that Kiwis’ desire for trustworthy news and entertainment is stronger than ever,” she says.

“I’m incredibly proud to be leading such an iconic title into the next phase of its evolution.”

Instrumental to the achievements of the past year, which includes winning the Magazine of the Year title at the 2021 Voyager Awards, has been editor-in-chief Pamela Stirling, whose commitment to quality, trustworthy journalism is unwavering and unrivalled.

After a well-deserved break, Stirling will remain involved with the NZ Listener in a weekly advisory role.

“With the Listener enjoying such renewed success, this is the perfect time to hand the pencil over to a new editor,” says Stirling.

“It has been a joy and a privilege to lead the talented and passionate Listener team in serving such a stimulating and highly-engaged readership. Together, we can celebrate not only the achievements of the past 12 months but the confident knowledge that the future is again assured for a much-loved New Zealand magazine at the heart of so many important conversations. It has been an extraordinary experience and, after such an intense role, I am looking forward to new projects and spending time with my family who, I hear, are lovely people.”
