Duncan Garner and Rachel Smalley join MediaWorks’ new talk brand

Duncan Garner and Rachel Smalley are set to join MediaWorks’ new talk brand in 2022. They’ll join Tova O’Brien who was announced as the new station’s breakfast host earlier this week.

Duncan Garner has spent more than 20 years working across TV and radio, most recently as the host of The AM Show.

“I love radio and can’t wait to join the team at MediaWorks and get back into it in 2022. We’re looking how we can reinvent the format which is an exciting challenge, but personally I can’t wait to hear from Kiwis once again,” Garner says.

Rachel Smalley also has an extensive radio, TV and digital print background, working in the media industry for more than two decades, including as a foreign correspondent for TV3 and as an award-winning host of Newstalk ZB’s Early Edition which she fronted for four years.

“Nothing beats the challenge of live radio, plus this is a really great opportunity to do talk radio a little bit differently. It’s new, it’s fresh, and it’s chock-full of strong journalists. All of that makes this role so appealing. I’ve got licence to take a few risks, and I’m really looking forward to working alongside Tova and Duncan again,” says Smalley.

MediaWorks Director of News & Talk Dallas Gurney adds: “I’m ecstatic to have Duncan and Rachel join MediaWorks as we work towards launching a new talk brand in 2022.

“Given COVID-19, there’s obviously been a huge uptake in audience engagement with news content. But we want to build a brand which looks beyond the next few years, takes a long-term view and introduces a new, diverse audience to talk radio.

“We look forward to sharing more details on our new brand, some more new faces and how we’ll be doing things with news and talk at MediaWorks in the weeks and months ahead.”
