Waiheke Island entices visitors back with new campaign

Waiheke Island Tourism Incorporated (WITI) has launched a warm Waiheke welcome video campaign to support the Island’s Covid recovery.

The campaign is a great example of the power of promotion being utilised by agile local businesses working together to entice visitors back after the toughest lockdown in the country – under all steps at Alert Level 3 only Waiheke Island residents were allowed on the destination hotspot, which relies heavily on Auckland and domestic travellers.

The campaign concept and storyboard creation was developed by WITI’s PR team Rebecca Reid and Kate Grant from NSPR Ltd. WITI Chair Christina Hyde and WITI Communications Manager Chrissy Powlesland managed production and filming pulled together within five days.

The campaign focuses on welcoming non-residents back to the Island, and lets hesitant travellers know they will receive a warm reception from the business community, as Auckland shifts into the traffic light system on December 15.

Christina Hyde, Chair of WITI, says businesses on the Island are rejoicing the border has finally lifted and businesses are frantically prepping for the summer season.

“The campaign lets non-residents know Waiheke Island is back in business and expresses our excitement to welcome visitors back with open-arms,” Hyde says.

“We want domestic tourists to know that we have missed them spending on Island, staying on Island, visiting, eating, and drinking with us.

“It has been a hard time for all of the Auckland region, but particularly tough for our Island business community unable to trade to non-residents. But as we move forward a warm Waiheke welcome is a reminder to all that our island paradise awaits, and summer is on!”

The campaign has a distinct Waiheke feel, and features famous Waiheke faces, including celebrity chef Josh Emmett, the Mad Butcher and Joanna Paul.

“Most of us have a long road to recovery ahead,” Hyde says.

“But we can now look to summer with confidence. We can’t wait to greet visitors with a warm Waiheke welcome.”
