Record viewership for 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup

More than 2.2 million people in New Zealand tuned in to watch the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup on both Sky Sport and Sky Open (previously Prime) from when it began on July 20th.

The television audience equates to 46.1 percent of all New Zealanders aged 5+, with half of those viewers female (1.1 million).

New Zealanders were hooked from the first whistle with the Football Fern’s opening game against Norway delivering an historic first ever FIFA World Cup win for the Ferns and reaching nearly 900,000 viewers. With a win in the bag the Football Fern’s elimination match against Switzerland drew an even larger audience, reaching over 1 million New Zealanders across Sky and Sky Open, the highest viewership recorded in New Zealand for the tournament.

In what has been a watershed event for women’s sport, the FIFA Women’s World Cup reach of more 2.2 million New Zealanders surpasses television audiences for the popular 2021 Women’s Rugby World Cup (1.9 million), the ICC Women’s World Cup (1.1 million) and even last year’s Commonwealth Games (1.9 million).

In addition to the huge TV audience reach on Sky Sport and Sky Open, record viewership numbers were achieved on Sky’s streaming platforms, Sky Go and Sky Sport Now.
