Basement Theatre and D.A.M.N highlight role of artists with new campaign

Basement Theatre, in collaboration with the arts advocacy group D.A.M.N, has unveiled a vibrant new campaign that highlights the diverse and expansive contributions of artists in shaping the identity of Tāmaki Makaurau, showcasing how they truly ‘Make Auckland’.

Despite the challenges the last two years have brought to New Zealand, Auckland artists remain steadfastly committed to leaving indelible, life-changing impressions on the hearts and minds of Aucklanders.

“From the heart of our Central Business District to the serene suburbs and rugged west coast, artists across Auckland are crafting experiences that elevate and inspire our community,” says Cat Ruka, Executive Director for Basement Theatre. “They strengthen social bonds, fuel economic growth, and forge a profound sense of local pride and identity.

“Yet, these artists, who garner international acclaim, often remain unnoticed or unappreciated in their own backyard.

“It’s time we change this Kaupapa and really empower our community of artists; their immense contributions deserve recognition, and that’s precisely why we are excited to introduce ‘Artists Make’.”

Artists Make is an inclusive campaign inviting all Aucklanders to support and celebrate local artists through a collection of work.

Inviting all proud supporters of the arts community, Basement has created “Artists Make” slogans on clothing and accessories from totes to teesThe first drop will be available to purchase at Basement’s 15th Birthday Blowout Event taking place this Saturday, 23rd September 2023.

“The simple yet powerful statements from this initiative, and in public view convey an appreciation for our talented artists and serve as a daily reminder that we see them,” says Ruka.

All items in the ‘Artists Make’ collection are priced at cost, ensuring accessibility for as many people as possible.

“Our primary goal is not profit, but to encourage you to wear your love for artists on your sleeve – or anywhere else you choose. Wear it to work, to the marae, to family gatherings, and even to the voting booth,” adds Ruka.

Drawing inspiration from MoMA PS1’s ‘Artists Make New York’ project, this campaign has been initiated in Aotearoa by Auckland’s Basement Theatre in collaboration with D.A.M.N.
