AUCKLAND, Today: Radio 531pi has hired William Terite, a top New Zealand Pacific journalist, to host Pacific Mornings starting May 13. The show, crucial for Pacific news, airs from 6 to 9 AM.
Terite, formerly with Newshub and of Cook Islands/Māori descent, takes over a program that’s shaping the news landscape for communities in Aotearoa New Zealand and beyond.
Pacific Mornings is part of Radio 531pi’s lineup, one of two stations in the Pacific Media Network, which includes Niu FM. This show is among three English-language programs on the station.
PMN’s Head of Content, Susana Guttenbeil, notes, “William’s role underscores our commitment to quality journalism and addressing our Pacific audience’s needs.”
“It’s been a 9-month search to find a host with the right skills to elevate our show,” she said. Guttenbeil wanted someone who could blend multimedia savvy with a passion for Pacific perspectives.
Last October, PMN launched an award-winning website, positioning Pacific Mornings under PMN News, strengthening their news operation. This move aligns with their strategy to enhance news gathering and reporting.
“With our existing and new talent, we’re set to offer unparalleled Pacific news coverage.” – Justin Latif
PMN also boosted its newsroom by hiring Christine Rovoi as a Senior Journalist and Alakihihifo Vailala as a political reporter. This expands their coverage capabilities, especially in parliamentary news.
Justin Latif, PMN News Chief of News, is optimistic about the future. “With our existing and new talent, we’re set to offer unparalleled Pacific news coverage,” he remarked.
They’re also developing a multimedia news operation to connect with audiences everywhere—online, on the radio, or via social media, Latif added.
Executive Producer Samson Samasoni is transforming the breakfast show, aiming to inform, educate, and entertain. New segments start May 13, enhancing the show’s pace and engagement.
Samasoni highlights the program’s role in fostering understanding and dialogue within Pacific communities. “We’re committed to using our cultural approaches and values in our storytelling,” he said.
“With William on board, supported by our skilled newsroom, we expect to lead in Pacific news coverage every weekday,” he mentioned. They’ve already achieved several firsts, like extensive coverage of new legislation affecting Samoan citizens in New Zealand.
Levi Matautia-Morgan, the interim host and producer, will team up with Terite to continue delivering a dynamic and engaging breakfast show.
Terite, also a former Newstalk ZB journalist, is passionate about amplifying Pacific voices. “I’m thrilled to help bring our unique stories to the forefront,” he stated.
“PMN is focused on keeping our communities informed and entertained, and I’m excited to be a part of that,” Terite concluded.
