NZ’s broadcasters celebrate annual awards success

NZME’s Newstalk ZB is celebrating winning Network of the Year at the NZ Radio & Podcast Awards, a ceremony that acknowledges the wide breadth of radio and broadcasting talent across New Zealand.

The 2024 awards were presented at Sky City Theatre in Auckland and hosted by Jeremy Corbett. It covers all aspects of the radio and podcasting industry from on-air personalities, programming, news and sports coverage, promotions, sales and marketing campaigns.

As well as Network of the Year, NZME took home a range of other awards including Best Talk Presenter for Mike Hosking and ZM’s Fletch, Vaughn and Hayley winning Best Music Network Breakfast Show.

Jason Winstanley, NZME’s Chief Audio Officer says he’s thrilled with this year’s wins.

“I’m so proud of our team at NZME for a fantastic result tonight. The breadth of our award wins really showcases the talent we have across NZME not just in our teams that produce excellent radio, digital audio and podcasts each and every day, but the people across the business that support them to succeed.”

MediaWorks is celebrating wins in 19 categories, with Bevan Chapman taking out Best Local Music Host and the Sir Paul Holmes Broadcaster of the Year Award for his work reporting solo amidst Cyclone Gabrielle.

MediaWorks CEO Wendy Palmer expressed how proud she is of the talented team at MediaWorks.

“It’s fantastic to shine a light on their incredible work from last year. From some of our up and coming superstars through to stalwarts of broadcasting they have kept our audiences coming back for more.”

Radio Broadcasters Association & Awards Chair Jana Rangooni said the over 600 entries were all examples of the outstanding radio & podcasts produced in New Zealand every year and the reason why radio audiences are strong with over 3.6 million listeners aged 10+ listening every week and podcast listening is strong.

“Listeners use radio for news, information, entertainment, music and sometimes just for company. In times of emergencies, we are still the primary media people turn to, to find out what’s going on. This was evident in many of the entries for 2023 that related to the severe North Island weather events at the start of the year”.

Alistair Jamison, CE of the RBA adds, “For 2024 we have expanded the podcast categories from five to 16, in recognition of this rapidly growing section of the increasingly diverse audio industry. It was great to see that we had 125 entries from a wide range of podcast creators, all of whom are creating world class podcast content.”
