This Christmas, Spark is celebrating tamariki with its inaugural Spark Christmas Art Competition, a quest to uncover the next generation of artistic talent in Aotearoa.
The nationwide competition gives budding artists (ages 11-18) the chance to have their artwork featured on Spark’s very own national Christmas card and on the big screen.
Participants are encouraged to submit a piece of art using traditional techniques such as painting, doodling, or drawing. The two winning designs will be showcased on selected billboards in Auckland and near the winners’ home regions, and each will feature on a national Christmas card available free with purchases made in selected Spark stores just in time for Christmas.
To help the winners unleash their gift and take their artwork to the next level, Spark has partnered with acclaimed multidisciplinary artist and creative director, Blue-Monty Hamel, who will lead the judging panel for the competition, and provide a one-on-one mentorship session with the two winners.
Famous for his groundbreaking work in visual effects and 3D artistry, Hamel’s work blending traditional and digital mediums highlights the innovative possibilities that emerge when art and technology come together.
Hamel says, “I’m eager to see how young artists explore their creative instincts to truly express themselves through their work and experiment with their creativity.
“This competition is all about unfiltered imagination, and I’m looking for entries that capture the holiday spirit while inspiring others to embrace their artistic journey.”
Spark’s Director of Marketing and Data, and judge Matt Bain says, “we’re excited to offer young New Zealanders a platform to show their creativity this festive season.
“Christmas is all about gifting – and we hope this competition inspires New Zealanders to get involved, whether that’s unleashing their own creative gift by entering, or thinking about gifts for their loved ones that could help bring their talents to life.
“We know that the right piece of technology can play a pivotal role in unleashing our potential which is why we’re stoked to partner with Samsung to provide the winners with Samsung Galaxy Tab S9FE tablets and a stylus pen so they can unleash their artistic gift even further in a digital landscape.”
Joining Hamel and Bain on the judging panel will be Josie Selkirk, an up-and-coming wāhine Māori artist with a deep-rooted connection to her cultural heritage. Selkirk has been inspiring young artists across the country with her dynamic contributions across a range of mediums including painting, digital media and te ao Māori inspired art.
With Spark’s commitment to both technology and creativity, this competition is set to bring a little extra holiday magic to New Zealand this year, celebrating the artistic talents of tamariki across the country.
