Cori Gonzales-Macuer, an animated David Seymour and bad hakas are all features of a campaign opposing ACT’s Treaty Principles Bill.
Wellington advertising agency Ambitious Aotearoa enlisted the help of Gonzales-Macuer (What We Do in the Shadows, 7 Days) to voice the ad, which urges New Zealanders to call for a stop to the bill.
The original deadline for submissions to the Select Committee was midnight on December 7, with the volume of traffic crashing Parliament’s website. An extended deadline has been set for 1pm January 14.
The ad compares Seymour’s bill with other ‘bad ideas that belong in the past’ like the cringe-worthy All Black hakas of the 1970s, mullets and the music of John Rowles.
Using the tagline, ‘Let’s not go there again, eh,’ the campaign highlights how New Zealand has already said ‘no’ to a rewrite of the principles as caricatures of Don Brash and Winston Peters appear on screen.
“Humour helps us connect,” says Ambitious Creative Director Jamie Patterson. “Whenever you’re trying to talk about a political issue it’s easy for people to get their back up. Taking a humorous approach, I think helps, people are a little less guarded and open to hearing the message.
“It’s such an important issue to all New Zealanders and ultimately it is a bit silly that we’re having to talk about it again.”
The ad is being rolled out across social media this week. It encourages Kiwis to visit the campaign’s website, honourthetreaty.org.nz. The site features a web form where people can write directly to their local MP.
The campaign is funded by not-for-profit Te Tiriti is Us and follows a widespread poster and billboard campaign that featured messages such as “I choose unity” and “I teach my kids how to share.”
