MAMA joins The Sweetshop as comedy duo expands globally

AUCKLAND, Today: The Sweetshop happily welcomes MAMA, a comedy duo now part of their lineup in New Zealand, Australia, UK, Europe, and Asia. Known for films with talking dogs and rogue coffee machines, MAMA is rising fast in the US comedy scene.

MAMA, made up of Mark Potoka and Matt Starr Spicer, started out by writing and shooting their own spec ads—hilarious, low-budget creations that they filmed at night while daydreaming about them during the day.

This grassroots effort has forged them into directors who are meticulous about their craft, bold in their comedic approach, and brilliant at turning the ridiculous into the sublime.

“Sweetshop is very excited to have Mark and Matt join. We like the same things, laugh at the same things, and now, we’ll make great things. Welcome to the team, gents!” – Greg Fyson

Ben Dailey, Managing Director/Executive Producer of The Sweetshop New Zealand, can’t hide his enthusiasm: “These two aren’t just directors, they’re engineers of chaos, honing their style of practical effects, surreal scenarios, and razor-sharp comedy for Geico, McCain, Monster, Extra Gum, and assorted spicy foodstuffs. Welcome aboard MAMA!”

Greg Fyson, Global Head of Director Development at The Sweetshop, also shares his excitement: “Sweetshop is very excited to have Mark and Matt join. We like the same things, laugh at the same things, and now, we’ll make great things. Welcome to the team, gents!”

Upon joining The Sweetshop, MAMA shared: “We kicked off our career with practical effects and cinematic dumb-funny comedy and never looked back. Signing with The Sweetshop is an exciting next step, and we can’t wait to wreak some beautifully crafted havoc in new markets.”

For anyone who loves edgy, hysterically funny filmmaking with a unique twist—get ready for MAMA. Buckle up for the ride.
