Together celebrates Independents’ Day as new government rules come into effect

Independent media agency Together has marked December 1 2025 as “Independents’ Day” in celebration of the new government procurement rules coming into effect.

The rules, now in their fifth edition, strongly encourage the consideration and use of Kiwi-owned agencies in government procurement decisions.

All government agencies must now evaluate the economic benefit to New Zealand when purchasing goods or services over $ 100,000. For smaller government contracts under $ 100,000, the new rules expect agencies to award work to Kiwi businesses by default, unless there’s a compelling reason not to.

The rules were announced in October and came into effect on December 1.

Prioritising NZ businesses

“These changes are significant for New Zealand-owned independent agencies,” says Together Wellington’s managing director of media Annabelle Wilkinson.

“They mean government decision-making should further prioritise NZ businesses that keep profits in New Zealand, employ and nurture NZ talent and continue to deliver world class work from New Zealand for New Zealand. We’re delighted to have marked the moment with our indie friends and are looking forward to working further with government agencies to support this change.”

Celebrations across Wellington

Together’s Wellington team celebrated the news of “Independents’ Day” with a full page ad in The Post and outdoor advertising across the Wellington city centre.

The Independents’ Day was also shared with other independent agencies so they could join the celebration. The work was developed by Together’s in-house Co:Lab team with input from Kiwi independent advertising leaders John Plimmer and Duncan Munro.
