TBWA puts The Warehouse back into Kiwi life

AUCKLAND, Today: The Warehouse is planting its familiar red flag across Aotearoa with This is Warehouse Country, a major new platform from TBWA\New Zealand celebrating its place in everyday Kiwi life.

Launched nationwide on 23 August, the work is the first major expression of a wider business transformation spanning customer experience, store expansion, new merchandising initiatives and category growth.

Running across television, digital and OOH, the campaign captures recognisably Kiwi moments, from learning to drive in a Warehouse car park and sheltering beneath a Red Bag to Saturday footy and family roadies.

The iconic Red Bag is the campaign’s recurring hero, appearing as a symbol of everyday value and the familiar companion that somehow keeps turning up wherever Kiwi life happens.

Behind the idea is a simple truth: few retailers share The Warehouse’s reach or connection with communities. Its 84 stores and more than 10,000 team members stretch across major cities and regional towns.

The platform also reaches back to the company’s founding spirit: making desirable products more affordable for everyday New Zealanders. This is Warehouse Country reconnects with that legacy while preparing the brand for its next growth chapter.

We wanted something big, bold and entertaining that celebrates our place in New Zealand life and reminds Kiwis that The Warehouse is a brand that’s always on their side.” – Frankie Coulter, Chief Marketing Officer, The Warehouse Group

The Warehouse Group Chief Marketing Officer Frankie Coulter said the campaign marked an important milestone within the retailer’s broader transformation.

“This campaign is about reconnecting New Zealanders with what has always made The Warehouse special; almost every New Zealand has a story involving The Warehouse and we have had the privilege of being there for big and small moments that matter.

Our ambition is to become Aotearoa New Zealand’s number one retailer again, so we’re transforming the business from the inside out to unleash the next stage of growth, and that means strengthening every part of the customer experience, from what Kiwis see in our advertising to what they experience in our stores.

“This is much bigger than an advertising campaign. It’s the first major brand expression of our transformation agenda and sets the foundation for how The Warehouse will show up as we continue to evolve the business. As we grow our network and refresh our offer, we’re doing so with the same purpose we’ve always maintained: helping New Zealanders live better by making the things they need and want more accessible.”

“Improvements customers will see across our stores and the launch of This is Warehouse Country are all part of that evolution. We wanted something big, bold and entertaining that celebrates our place in New Zealand life and reminds Kiwis that The Warehouse is a brand that’s always on their side.”

For TBWA\New Zealand, the task was to help a national retail icon recover its distinctiveness in a category increasingly driven by transactions rather than human connection.

The insight wasn’t just that The Warehouse is everywhere in New Zealand. It’s that it’s never missed a moment.” – Shane Bradnick, Chief Creative Officer, TBWA\New Zealand

The answer came from looking beyond the aisles and recognising the emotional role The Warehouse has played in countless milestones, celebrations and wonderfully ordinary moments.

TBWA\New Zealand Chief Creative Officer Shane Bradnick said, “When we looked at The Warehouse, we realised its story isn’t confined to what’s happening inside the aisles. Its story is happening everywhere. The insight wasn’t just that The Warehouse is everywhere in New Zealand. It’s that it’s never missed a moment.

“For generations, Kiwis have turned to The Warehouse for life’s biggest milestones and smallest occasions alike. The brand has been there for first homes, family celebrations, road trips, rainy days, sporting weekends and countless everyday memories.

“That gave us a powerful creative platform. Rather than talking about products or promotions, we wanted to tell the story of a retailer that’s been quietly present in the background of Kiwi life for decades. When you start looking at New Zealand through that lens, you realise this really is Warehouse Country.”

Shot across urban and rural New Zealand by GoodOil and directed by Hamish Rothwell, the campaign blends humour, warmth and nostalgia while highlighting the retailer’s range and value. Much of the storytelling happens beyond the stores, although the familiar in-store welcome also gets its moment.

The message is deliberately bigger than retail. New Zealand is not simply where The Warehouse operates; after nearly five decades of showing up for everyday Kiwi moments, the campaign declares it Warehouse Country.
