TVNZ has proposed strategic changes that would allow it to plug its $ 30 million revenue hole while continuing to ensure the business is sustainable.
The proposals were announced on October 7 as a way to make $ 30 millions in savings and deliver on TVNZ’s Digital+ strategy during a company-wide meeting.
If carried out, it would lead to a major restructure, as well as the closure of the 1News website and app, while youth news platform Re: News will shift its focus solely to video storytelling from February next year.
TVNZ also proposed the following to staff:
- Consolidate some business areas to align with its strategy
- Outsource some areas across TVNZ’s content workflows and technology (in FY26)
- Invest in news on TVNZ+ and establishing a new, dedicated team for this function
- Change some roster patterns
- Create a centre for excellence for data, analytics and AI
- Create a Creative Hub
A TVNZ spokesperson told 1News that it is currently seeking feedback on the proposals from staff and no further decisions would be made until after consultation period was over.
This is not the first cuts TVNZ have had to make this year, with current affairs shows Fair Go and Sunday axed in May, as well as roles from Re: News and other parts of the business.
