New work from Google celebrates community spirit

Google Australia and Colenso BBDO have launched a campaign to celebrate the resurgence of community spirit in the wake of COVID-19.

While the pandemic has been isolating, it’s also brought people closer together and Google products – from local business listings to Maps – have helped play a role in this.

To tell that story Google tapped rising star, Melbourne-based director Sanjay De Silva, from production company DIVISION.

The story of a young woman shopping is captured with De Silva’s distinctive style, using immersive camera techniques and visual playfulness. Paired with music by Chris Valentine, the result is a swagger-filled film told through community interactions.

The twist at the end celebrates how the Google tools we use daily can help us help others.

De Silva says: “We were just having some fun on this one. It’s a simple story so I felt it really needed to have some attitude while still being vibrant and playful. And, it’s always important for me to present a beautifully diverse Australian community, because that’s the Australia I know.”

Google Australia’s Marketing Director, Apps & Platforms, Cam Luby, says: “We’re proud to partner with Sanjay and Colenso to shine a light on the importance of community spirit and the role Google plays within it.”

The 60-second film went to air at the end of May, however the campaign will ‘go dark’ in Victoria out of respect for the latest lockdown.
