Wham Bam, Poetry Slam!

AUCKLAND, Thursday: Phantom Billstickers has selected five previously unpublished poets to showcase their work in Phantom frames near each poet’s home turf.

“We’ve been thrilled to publish some powerful poems from New Zealand writers over the years,” writes sales director Rupert Fenton in the latest edition of their weekly newsletter, Phan Mail.

“From James K Baxter to Tayi Tibble, Phantom has been putting their poems in front of new eyes, and helping demonstrate that New Zealand poetry is alive and well in the 21st century.

“Last year, we extended the concept. What say we invited unpublished poets to submit their words?

“Think of it as an ‘open mic’ on posters – with the payoff being exposure across Phantom’s network.

“Well, that set things off. 217 poets answered the call.

“The winning poems are now starting to appear in Phantom frames near each poet’s home turf.”

“It was a helluva tough choice, but in the end we settled on five outstanding new voices from around Aotearoa …

  • Connie Fraser – Auckland.
  • Dorian David Leigh – Palmerston North.
  • Sophie Procter – Auckland.
  • Saraja – Wairoa.
  • M R Henderson – Hokitika.

“The winning poems are now starting to appear in Phantom frames near each poet’s home turf.

“Every artist needs an audience

“That’s why Phantom beats the drum for New Zealand creativity. We do our bit, because we believe poetry lives in the minds of its readers – and one of the best ways to reach new readers is when they’re out in the street.

“Look out for the five winners of Phantom’s Open Mic Poetry Contest on a wall near you. You could snap a picture, and share their words with your own network.

“Because great writing should always be celebrated

“Whether you’re creating art or selling products, nothing connects with New Zealand audiences like a Phantom campaign.”
