WELLINGTON, Sunday: The resurgence of NZ’s magazine industry has been one of the big media stories of the past year, with a host of new online titles emerging from the ashes of Bauer, according to a report by Jack Yan in online news service BusinessDesk.
“The new magazines are getting to grips with the demands of digital publishing,” he writes.
Hong Kong born digital publishing pioneer Yan founded fashion and beauty magazine Lucire in 1997, in the early days of the world wide web.
The Wellington-based international title has survived for 24 years, from the age of dial-up internet, through some severe global economic crises, and more recently the pandemic.
“The whole Bauer thing was a positive – these magazines will drive each other. It’s not about one launching at the expense of another.”
The Kiwi entrepreneur, typeface designer, publisher, writer, and former candidate for the Wellington mayoralty believes the events of the past year have helped the domestic magazine industry.
“I think the whole Bauer thing was a positive,” he said from his home office in Wellington. “These magazines will drive each other. It’s not about one launching at the expense of another.”
