US games maker looks to Invercargill-based Atticus Road to assist with brand direction

United States-based Buena Onda Games, who have sold over two million games worldwide, have chosen Invercargill-based Atticus Road to assist with brand direction and continued international expansion.

Atticus Road has been awarded a contract from Buena Onda Games to help refine their brand language and work on their words, including packaging for the range of handmade games.

“Knowing the brand writing crafted here will be found on games sold in 10 countries and in over 1000 outlets across the US alone, such as those of major chains like LL Bean, is beyond exciting,” says Managing Director, Neil Kilby.

“The games themselves are amazing. All are handcrafted by Mayan villagers and fair trade.  For over 13 years, they’ve been bringing smiles to everyone who plays them.  We’re going to have some fun with the language so the words will bring some smiles too”.

The hero game in the range is the Mayaflya. The world’s softest, safest and most versatile frisbee. All of the games are hand crocheted by Mayan artisans in Guatemala and the company is committed to giving back, sustainably employing over 600 villagers, supporting projects such as water filtration and regularly donating school supplies to local children.

Buena Onda Games founder, Patrick Groft says: “Fun is universal and our games appeal to everyone. They do particularly well with campers and hikers, as they’re light and easy to stuff into a pocket or a backpack. But they also appeal to families, bringing together the generations and stepping everyone away from their devices for fun you can experience, not just scroll through.”

The focus on the brand language comes as Buena Onda expands into the United Kingdom, building on their established base in mainland Europe.

“We need a brand voice that appeals to the British and American markets but still has real personality. That’s where Neil and Atticus Road come into it. They have the experience in both markets and we’re gonna do something a little different together,” says Patrick.

That ‘something’ will include New Zealand and Australia. Part of the agreement between Buena Onda and Atticus Road is to launch the games over here.

“I keep some of the games in the back of my truck and bring them out when visiting with clients. The result is always the same. People want to play and have fun,” says Neil Kilby.

“So I’m really excited to bring the games over here and we’ll be setting up distribution in time for summer.”

Games set for launch in Australia and New Zealand include the Mayaflya, YippiYappa and Bocce.
