Meridian Energy has appointed The Monkeys Aotearoa, part of Accenture Interactive, as its new creative agency of record.
Part of the Meridian Group, Meridian Energy is New Zealand’s largest electricity generator, producing electricity from 100 percent renewable sources.
“For us it’s really important to work with partners who are committed to building more diverse, interesting, creative and challenging teams – that’s where we believe the most powerful creative comes from.
“The commitment we’ve got from The Monkeys to build a team like that gives us confidence that they’re the right creative partner for the future, who’ll help us continue our strong run of success,” says Michael Healy, Chief Marketing Officer at Meridian.
Meridian’s appointment of The Monkeys Aotearoa marks the second account win for the agency off the back of announcing the ASB win, and since launching the Auckland office in August.
The Monkeys Aotearoa CEO, Managing Director Accenture Interactive NZ, Justin Mowday says that he and the team are excited to have Meridian joining The Monkeys family. “Alongside ASB, we have the most progressive and exciting brands in their respective categories,” he says.

“Meridian is an extraordinary gentailer, responsible for supplying a third of the whole country’s electricity with 100 percent renewable energy, from wind, water and sun. But they’re thinking bigger than that, taking genuine action around decarbonisation and actually doing big things rather than just talking about it. They’re perfectly positioned for the future and we’re looking forward to being part of that.
“The Meridian marketing team are top-notch and have real momentum, and with a clear vision on where they need to go, it’ll be a privilege helping them get there. Winning Meridian further fuels our mission to build the most interesting, diverse and talented team in New Zealand,” Mowday adds.
Speaking exclusively to StopPress, Chief Creative Officer Damon Stapleton says: “The account win offers the agency opportunity within this future-focused sector to build on the great work already done by the Meridian brand. With important developments in sustainability and clean energy there is a lot of exciting creative potential with a brand in this space.”
He says that The Monkeys operating model is appealing to clients like Meridian who are increasingly concerned with how best to manage and implement a multichannel approach to marketing.
“With a proliferation of channels, clients are looking to us to help them tie it all together. The benefit of being part of the wider Accenture group is that The Monkeys Aotearoa is easily able to provide an integration of technological, data and creative solutions.”
When asked if he could speak to any new creative appointments within his team, Stapleton says: “We are building a team and will have more details to share soon.”
The Meridian appointment is effective October 1, 2021.
