The Spinoff has announced that Duncan Greive has resigned from his CEO position effective immediately and is handing over the reigns to Amber Easby.
Easby has been with The Spinoff since 2017 and was the founding leader of its video production company, Hex Work Productions.
“I am honoured to be taking on the role of CEO at The Spinoff, working alongside an extraordinarily talented group of people. Our mission remains the same: to produce high-quality, engaging, and thought-provoking content that informs, educates and entertains our audience,” she says.
Sophie Dowson, an experienced and highly regarded producer who works alongside Easby at Hex Work Productions, will step up to lead video across the companies.
The Spinoff will also farewell Mark Kelliher, the company’s GM, who has taken a role heading up PR & content agency, Drum. This all adds up to an entirely new era at The Spinoff, with Mad Chapman at the helm as editor.
Greive, who founded The Spinoff in 2014, explained that the decision to step down was due to a desire to return to his roots in journalism.
“I’d found myself sneaking away from my day job to spend my evenings and weekends writing features. That’s what I used to do, before starting The Spinoff,” he says.
Now he says he is excited to be returning to those roots, while still retaining a key governance role as chair of The Spinoff’s advisory board.
In an essay explaining the move, Greive wrote: “I’m looking forward to just being one of the troops – a tool at the disposal of The Spinoff editorial team, and watching what these two incredible wāhine toa do atop a little independent media organisation which still has big dreams and a vital public role to fulfil.”
