AUCKLAND, Today: Flatties was introduced a couple of weeks ago, and now Contact and Special have teamed up with Nigel, a rule-stickler penguin, to encourage Kiwis to cut energy use during peak times.
Contact is going big on renewable energy to decarbonise New Zealand. However, they need everyone’s help for a bigger impact. That’s where Good Plans come in—a simple way for Kiwis to shift their energy habits for New Zealand’s benefit.
The film features a classic showdown in a kitchen between two flatmates—one wants to run the dishwasher whenever, the other insists on waiting until off-peak hours, 9pm or 9am on weekends, when energy is more likely from renewable sources.
A duel ensues, flippers are drawn, and the electricity bill, and our home, comes out on top.
“We want to flatten New Zealand’s power spikes. It’s challenging, but small changes help all New Zealanders.”
Sam Morse, Head of Innovation and Growth at Contact, mentions, “We want to flatten New Zealand’s power spikes. It’s challenging, but small changes help all New Zealanders. Good Plans let us shift our energy habits and dodge peak times.
“With Good Nights, power is free after 9pm till midnight, and with Good Weekends, it’s free from 9am to 5pm on weekends. What’s not to like about that?”
Jonathan McMahon, Special CCO, says, “We’ve made our message entertaining to stress a simple point—wait until after 9. It’s minor, but with Good Plans, we’ll see a big difference.
“Here, Nigel acts as the delay start button on our appliances, encouraging us to tackle problems like Nigel does, ensuring it’s not just good to be home now, but for future generations too.”
