AUCKLAND, Today: Māori-owned creative agency RUN Aotearoa teamed up with Sylvia Park to celebrate Matariki. They created a campaign inspired by whai, traditional Māori string games played during Matariki.
The installation honours Matariki and Te Whare Tapere, linking the Matariki star cluster and its nine stars to whai string formations. Huge panels at Sylvia Park showcase stunning visuals of hands and whai patterns, with the names of the Matariki stars in typography.
“We aim to educate and inspire people in an accessible way through our mahi, and this campaign does just that.” – Raymond Otene McKay
Raymond Otene McKay, RUN Co-founder and CCO, shared, “Each year we’re asked to create campaigns centred around Matariki and we love challenging ourselves to create original work, just like our ancestors did.”
“We aim to educate and inspire people in an accessible way through our mahi, and this campaign does just that,” Raymond added.
The campaign also includes social media, digital assets, OOH, and an activation where shoppers can learn to create Matariki whai patterns themselves.
