AUCKLAND, Today: Young Kiwi artists are getting their big break this Christmas with the inaugural Spark Christmas Art Competition, aimed at uncovering the next generation of creative talent in Aotearo.
Open to tamariki ages 11-18, the nationwide competition offers a unique chance for young artists to have their work featured on Spark’s national Christmas card and displayed on big screens across New Zealand.
Participants can dive into traditional art styles like painting, doodling, or drawing. Two winning designs will light up select billboards in Auckland and near the winners’ hometowns, and each piece will be printed on Spark’s Christmas card, available free with in-store purchases.
Adding to the excitement, Spark has brought on celebrated artist and creative director Blue-Monty Hamel, who’ll lead the judging panel and mentor the winners. Known for blending traditional and digital art.
Hamel says, “I’m eager to see how young artists explore their creative instincts to truly express themselves through their work and experiment with their creativity.”

“This competition is all about unfiltered imagination,” he added. “I’m looking for entries that capture the holiday spirit while inspiring others to embrace their artistic journey.”
Joining Hamel is Spark’s Director of Marketing and Data, Matt Bain, who says, “We’re excited to offer young New Zealanders a platform to show their creativity this festive season.”
“Christmas is all about gifting – and we hope this competition inspires New Zealanders to get involved,” he continued, whether by creating their own art or finding meaningful gifts to support their loved ones’ talents.
Thanks to Spark’s partnership with Samsung, winners will receive Samsung Galaxy Tab S9FE tablets with a stylus to help explore their digital creativity.
The judging panel also includes Māori artist Josie Selkirk, whose work in painting, digital media, and te ao Māori art has inspired young artists nationwide.
With Spark blending tech and creativity, this competition adds extra holiday magic, celebrating the artistic spirit of tamariki across New Zealand.
