TradeMe’s Job Hunt January returns: Kathmandu searches for Overseas Enthusiast

TradeMe’s Job Hunt January is back and this time, they’ve partnered with outdoor clothing and equipment brand Kathmandu to offer the position of Overseas Enthusiast.

The temporary role will see the successful candidate and their chosen travel partner will go on the travel itinerary of their dreams for up to three months, equipped with the latest Kathmandu gear.

Their job? To document their travels and create content that inspires other to embrace the spirit of adventure.

This offer is the “money shot”, says Katie Parker, TradeMe Jobs’ B2C & B2B Marketing Manager.

“Those roles, two paid OEs, were hugely driven by [Kathmandu] and their enthusiasm for it all. We didn’t even dream of that kind of role.”

Going gangbusters

Along with the Kathmandu role, there’s a position going with Burger King to be a “Whopper-o-logist” and find the best Whopper burger in Aotearoa. The third role is with Animals Like Us, which offers the opportunity to work as Chief Good Boy or Girl and create content with a furry friend.

It’s the second time TradeMe Jobs has run its Job Hunt January campaign, which kicked off for the first time in 2024.

Last year’s listings got over 100,000 views and thousands of applications, says Parker. In particular, the role of Wicked Wing taste tester with KFC went absolutely gangbusters.

This year’s campaign is already building on its predecessor’s success. When Parker spoke to StopPress earlier this week, listing views had already surpassed those of 2024.

Joining the buzz

January is when TradeMe Jobs sees the biggest jump of Kiwis hunting for new jobs compared to any other time of the year, and so Job Hunt January offers a fantastic opportunity to capitalise on that buzz, says Parker.

“After the summer break, you’ve got this renewed sense of yourself and what you’d like to do, and sometimes that is something different. And maybe when we’re in that more relaxed state we start to think that new things are possible.

“We’re super proud of it all, it’s a reimagination of what your job life or work life could be, which is why we see a lot of people hunting around this time.”

Parker says TradeMe Jobs was lucky to work with agency partner Special on the campaign for the second time in a row, putting their heads together to dream up partnerships and then creating the job roles from there.

Energy and engagement

The thousands of applications received are tracked through TradeMe Jobs application system. There’s standard screening questions regarding eligibility to work in Aotearoa, and every applicant requires a CV and cover letter.

“It will require a bit of analysis through some amazing CVs, I’m sure,” says Parker with a laugh.

Applications for the roles close today, January 31, and Parker is excited for what’s to come for the successful candidates.

“It’s a way to inject energy, fun and passion into the job hunt as well as what could be – and we’re here to make it happen,” says Parker.

“Now it’s going to be an ongoing campaign every year, Kiwi are starting to get onboard and get engaged and be part of the conversation and get amongst these incredible roles.”

TradeMe Jobs is thankful for its partners Kathmandu, Animals Like Us and Burger King, as well as KFC, PetDirect and the Fijian Drua from last year, who have been just excited about this work as they have.
