Insight Creative, a Wellington-based strategy and design business, has announced the release of its first VR game, Colorway Antics.
The VR game is now available now in Steam with SideQuest and Meta’s AppLab/Quest Store to follow shortly.
Colorway Antics is a VR colouring game that follows a group of friends getting up to a series of teenage high-jinks across a mixture of real and imagined worlds.
Jeremy Sweetman, Insight Creative’s Director, Digital Experience says: “As a father of three teenagers, the rapid rise of teenage mental health issues over recent years, some leading to suicide, is very scary. Our kids face too much pressure in this ‘always-on’ world, so the simple idea behind Colorway Antics was to celebrate a more carefree, fun-filled teenage life, full of laughter, exploration and creativity.”
Players go on adventures with our characters by colouring in six unique environments, ranging from underground caves to tree houses, a zombie playground and into outer space. Each 3D canvas sees players unleash their creativity, layering colours to create multi-dimensional pieces of art in their own signature style.
Key to creating a world of endless colourful possibilities is the extended paint palette. A wide choice of vibrant colours allows players to paint a scene by using one of the four painting tools. The paint wand fills large areas with colour using simple point and-click accuracy. Varying paint brush sizes allow players to add subtle details to make each scene their own. Paintballs add a seriously fun element and the sticker wand enables players to personalise a space with a variety of graffiti style graphical elements.
Beyond the well-considered painting palette and simple to use controls, what makes Colorway Antics unique from other colouring VR games is the opportunity to move through a 3D world, and the ability to liberally splash colour onto every surface. Players can move, teleport and fly around the scenes, unleashing their creativity and letting their imagination go wild.
“While some players may choose to paint the scene quickly, using the wand and paintball options, others can easily spend hours producing detailed masterpieces. Better still, players can come back again and again, painting the scene in new ways each time,” says Sweetman.
Colorway Antics is the first VR game, by multi-award-winning New Zealand creative studio, Insight Creative. Insight has been in business for nearly 50 years, designing insightful work that changes perception, drives behaviours and delivers results. In recent years they’ve created numerous interactive experiences that combine physical and digital applications to immerse audiences in the story. This first game comes from Mīharo, the studio’s innovation lab, an initiative designed to push creative boundaries with a strong wellbeing, community and social bias.
“Colouring is perfect for reducing stress and anxiety. It’s relaxing, simple to pick-up and it encourages both imagination and creativity. Colorway Antics harnesses these timeless benefits in a fun and engaging way, using the latest VR technology, to connect with teens through things that appeal to them.“
