AUCKLAND, Today: The Advertising Standards Authority, is commemorating 50 years of advertising self-regulation, with a refreshed roundup of some of the projects it’s been working on.
The list includes review of the Children & Young People’s Code and a guide on election advertising.
CEO Hilary Souter said: “ Our organisation was established by agencies, newspaper publishers and broadcasters in 1973 as the Committee of Advertising Practice (CAP) with the objective to maintain at all times and in all media, a generally acceptable standard of advertising.
“Over the years, our membership has grown and now encompasses publishers, broadcasters, digital platforms, advertisers and agencies across Aotearoa New Zealand.
“Our team enjoyed reviewing the largely paper files from the last century as we looked back through notable events to highlight the history of advertising self-regulation in NZ.”
“The ASA team of six FTE staff now deal annually with hundreds of complaints and queries about codes compliance and provide a range of in-person training and online resources to support our vision – Every Ad a Responsible Ad.
“We are immensely grateful to our members for their ongoing support, and current and previous members and Chairs of the Complaints, Appeal and Governance Boards for their leadership over the years.
“We acknowledge the wider industry, advertisers, agencies and media platforms for their continued support of the self-regulatory system, which is demonstrated through our extremely high compliance rate with decisions.
“Our team have enjoyed reviewing the largely paper files from the last century as we looked back through notable events across the years to highlight the history of advertising self-regulation in New Zealand.
