AUCKLAND, Today: Hawke’s Bay is eagerly awaiting the inaugural Hastings Meatball Festival. On March 14th, up to 25 vendors will showcase unique meatball variations in the CBD.
This festival is a creation of the Hastings District Council, kicks off the Hawke’s Bay Food and Wine Classic. It even attracted New Zealand culinary icon Peter Gordon, who will be whipping up his special wagyu beef meatballs at the event.
“I am beyond excited to be part of Aotearoa New Zealand’s first ever meatball festival,” says Peter. “I’ll be making and serving my First Light Farms wagyu beef meatballs with kawakawa salsa verde, with help from the students at EIT, carrying on the good work we did at Homeland working with local produce and passing on skills.
“I’m also rather excited about the other meatballs on offer. From what I’ve read they are going to be next level,” Peter adds.
The festival boasts a lineup of local culinary talents, including Ben Bayly who’s crafting an Angus beef meatball with local Matangi beef. Over 20 different styles, including a vegan option, will be available for festival-goers to enjoy.

“It’s just incrediball to see how this concept has taken off,” enthuses Vicky Roebuck from the Hastings District Council. “Hastings has always had a reputation for being a bit ballsy.
“That’s just how we roll, so we thought, let’s celebrate our foodies! Hastings introduced the European delicacy of a crumbed bitterbal around 50 years ago so it’s always been a local must-eat, but we had underestimated how popular the Hastings Meatball Festival would be. Anticipation is at fever pitch!”
The festival promises a family-friendly atmosphere with plenty of activities, live music, and a chance for attendees to vote for their favourite meatball.
“It’s a massive thrill to be involved in shaping New Zealand’s first meatball fest,” says Vicky. “My advice – get your friends together, register for tickets, arrive early and come hungry!”
Set against the backdrop of stunning Hawke’s Bay locations, F.A.W.C! offers a series of food and wine experiences from March 14-23, featuring intimate sessions with top chefs and wine makers.
