SYDNEY, Saturday: Mumbrella head of content Damian Francis has published a handy potted history on the fortunes over the past decade of Clemenger Group AUNZ – with a special focus on former Colenso BBDO ceo Nick Garrett.
“Clemenger became part of BBDO back in 1972 when it sold a 35% share to the global network, with Peter Clemenger, still on the Clemenger Group board today, joining the BBDO Worldwide board.,” Francis writes.
“BBDO Worldwide (part of Omnicom Group) now owns 74% of Clemenger Group.
“Last decade saw Clemenger Group go from strength to strength. It was arguably the most successful group of the decade. In its success, it uncovered one of the most respected leaders in the industry in Nick Garrett.
“While Clemenger Group is more than just creative – its reputation has been based firmly on creativity, and it will likely be judged on that for some time to come.”
“Garrett [originally from the UK] headed up Clemenger BBDO Melbourne from late 2015 after transitioning across from his position at Colenso New Zealand.
“It was a relatively simple decision for Clemenger Group to make, it would seem. Garrett had turned Colenso BBDO into a global creative powerhouse during his time there despite New Zealand’s tiny footprint.
“While in Australia, he repeated the success, taking over from the widely respected and also very successful Peter Biggs. In late 2017 Garrett added the Sydney office to his remit, which often sat in the shadows of Melbourne’s success.
“While Clemenger Group is more than just creative, its reputation has been based firmly on creativity in the past and it will likely be judged on that for some time to come.”
