Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei & MediaWorks celebrate Te Wiki o te reo Māori in Tāmaki Makaurau

AUCKLAND, Thursday: In celebration of Te Wiki o te reo Māori next week, Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei has teamed up with MediaWorks’ Mai FM for another collaborative campaign.

Like last year the campaign will run across digital billboards located in high traffic areas around Auckland city in conjunction with an integrated radio competition to encourage listeners – particularly those in Auckland – to integrate more te reo Māori into their everyday conversations.

Taking place during next week’s Te Wiki o te reo Māori (Monday 13September to Friday 19th), the partnership aims to promote the use of te reo Māori through an interactive campaign integrated across outdoor and radio.

MediaWorks will again sponsor the outdoor media campaign, and has remained on board to sponsor the radio component.

The daily Kupu o te rā (phrase of the day) will be integrated with a radio competition on Mai FM.

The theme of this year’s campaign is ‘Lockdown countdown’, sharing words and small phrases that centre around living life in your bubble and now beginning the countdown until summertime returns.

“MediaWorks will again sponsor the outdoor media campaign, and has remained on board to sponsor the radio component.”

Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei Trust chair Marama Royal said: Encouraging Kiwis to practice te reo Māori is important to the hapū as they work to improve the presence of te reo Māori culture across Tāmaki Makaurau.

“As Ahi Kā of Tāmaki Makaurau, it is of high value for us to continue to encourage, promote and provide ways in which te reo Māori can be integrated into our city’s identity on a more frequent basis.

“Every day is Māori language day for Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei, but it is also important that we support nationwide campaigns that elevate te reo Māori.

“Each year Te Wiki o te reo Māori presents an opportunity to encourage those who may be new to the Māori language, and those who are more accustomed, to speak te reo Māori.”

Mai content director Reagan White says the campaign is a unique and interactive way to encourage the more frequent use of te reo Māori.

“Off the back of the success of last year’s campaign we are thrilled to be working with Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei to continue to encourage our listeners to broaden their use of te reo Māori, not just for the week of the campaign but into their everyday conversations.

“We want to encourage our listeners, particularly those in Tāmaki Makaurau who can get involved with the campaign, to take part in giving each Kupu o te rā a go.”
