Voyager recognition for prestigious monthly

AUCKLAND, Monday: North & South was among the media recognised at the Voyager Media Awards on Saturday – but never made the news (due in part to the NPA’s labrynthine website).

The seminal NZ monthly current-affairs title – founded in 1986 by ACP Magazines and Robyn Langwell – eventually became part of Bauer Media, who later sold it to independent publishers Konstantin Richter and Verena Friederike Hasel.

North & South contributing writer Pete McKenzie picked up Best Feature Writing (Crime & Justice) for his March 2021 cover story The Afterlife of Peter Ellis, Junior Feature Writer for his broader portfolio of work, and Feature Writer of the Year (Longform) for his North & South portfolio.

Māori issues editor Aaron Smale won in Best Team Investigation for his podcast about the Lake Alice psychiatric institution, The Lake, broadcast on Stuff.

Finalists in that same category were Naomi Arnold and Andy Macdonald for The Nazi Who Built Mt Hutt, the June 2021 cover story.

“McKenzie’s awards were collected on his behalf by his uncle, former tv journalist Gordon Harcourt. McKenzie is currently in New York, where he is a Fulbright scholar studying for his masters at the Columbia University Journalism School.”

Paul Gorman was a finalist in the Best Feature Writing category for his August 2021 story, Down on the Farm, about depression in farmers.

N&S ed Kirsty Cameron said: “Recognition by the judges for the phenomenal work that goes  into our stories is affirming.

“The Voyagers come with rigorous entry conditions – work must be both credible and fact-checked.

“We are proud to engage the country’s best writers to produce a current affairs magazine every month that holds its own against the work of major news organisations.

“I believe our readers are committed to the magazine for this reason too — we produce world-class journalism about New Zealand issues.”

Pete McKenzie’s awards were collected on his behalf by his uncle, former television journalist Gordon Harcourt. McKenzie is currently in New York, where he is a Fulbright scholar studying for his masters at the Columbia University Journalism School.

He will continue to contribute to North & South from the US.
