As local elections draw nearer, Policy.nz has made voting even simpler by launching a new interactive platform with the help of agency Daylight.
After first launching ahead of the 2017 New Zealand general elections, Policy.nz has grown to become an established part of the electoral landscape in New Zealand and has covered elections around the world.
With the aim of consolidating these websites to enable new growth and engagement, the task of overhauling the site has been an ambitious digital collaboration for Daylight’s tech team, which aims to be an interactive, complete guide to the local elections.
“This is such a timely, important project to launch into the world,” says Daylight digital production lead Todd Wright.
“Working closely with the team at Policy.nz to take their years of global and local research gathering and rebuild it into an updated and consolidated platform with an accessible, intuitive interface has been an amazing opportunity. We feel like this work has resulted in a meaningful platform that will make a real difference to local democracy.”
From bespoke illustrations by Daylight’s Ezra Whittaker-Powley to the use of a modern tech stack with a headless CMS, the platform enables users to input their local area, browse candidates and even compare key topics and issues that matter to them most.
“We made Policy.nz because we believe voters deserve reliable and easy-to-understand information about who to vote for. Daylight understood this mission from the very start and has been a key part of the success of the 2022 New Zealand local elections campaign,” says Ollie Neas, Policy.nz editorial director.
Intentions for the platform are ambitious, including growing to feature candidates for Aotearoa’s 2023 general election and eventually being able to be used as a series of white-labelled sites customisable for any electorate, anywhere in the world.
The 2022 local elections tool is the sixth election website developed by Policy.nz, and the fourth for elections in New Zealand.
