LONDON, Tuesday: The Rolling Stones are staying tight-lipped over plans to market their 31st studio album, Hackney Diamonds, due out in October. A cryptic print ad has already appeared in London newspaper The Hackney Gazette – but the media agency & creative forces behind the work have yet to be identified.
The graphic – said to be similar to the cover – looks like a generic newspaper ad for a new local store.
However, keen-eyed Stones fans soon picked out references in the ad promoting the new album release.
“The Stones have released 30 studio albums, 13 live albums, 28 compilation albums, 3 EPs, 121 singles, 33 box sets, 51 video albums, 2 video box sets and 77 music videos.”
The ad copy contains key words satisfaction and gimme shelter, and Est 1962 (the year the Stones was formed).
A visit to the website identified in the ad (srcoll down for the link) reveals it was placed by Universal Music Group – home to the Rolling Stones since 2008.
A single and TV trailer ads are apparently in the works.
Hackney Diamonds is London slang for broken glass, often the result of a robbery or vandalism.
The Stones – still playing live gigs after 60 years – have released 30 studio albums, 13 live albums, 28 compilation albums, 3 extended plays, 121 singles, 33 box sets, 51 video albums, 2 video box sets and 77 music videos.
Hackney Diamonds will be the Stones’ first release since the death of drummer Charlie Watts back in August 2021. It will feature remaining members Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood.
