The results are in for the 2023 Best of Natural Awards, New Zealand’s largest awards in natural health, beauty and eco-living celebrating the highest quality ingredient, ethical and environmental standards.
The judges – registered naturopath, herbalist and cosmetic chemist Liz McNamara, beauty expert and natural products entrepreneur Sara Corleison and beauty expert Melissa Williams-King – spent countless hours testing and trialling the products before deciding on the 37 category winners.
The People’s Choice Award, the next stage in the competition, launches today and encourages members of the public to vote for their favourite brand from the category winners from now until October 20.
“The Best of Natural Awards are about celebrating the best of the best of natural brands making a positive difference for people and the planet,” says Good magazine Editor Carolyn Enting.
Her third-time being a judge for these awards, McNamara says it was great to see so many brands that are making such a big impact with their business and using their business for better.
“We assess the brands for the impact that they’re having on people, the planet, how they’re sourcing their materials, the packaging they use, and how long they’ve been around for,” says McNamara.
Williams-King commented on the innovation in the Skincare & Make-up categories.
“What was really exciting is that we saw lots of cool things happening in the more affordable price point that you’d call masstige, but also some absolutely outstanding luxury brands right at the top of the market,” says Williams-King.
“And the same again in hair care. We had powders, sprays and really excellent solid shampoo bars. There’s lots of innovation happening.”
Second-time judge Sara Corleison enjoyed reviewing the child and baby category this year. “And so did my daughter, who’s three. It’s really good to see so many incredible brands with beautiful ingredients, knowing that they’ve got her best interests at heart.”
Corleison was also excited to see a broad array of functional mushroom products entered into this year’s Awards, which she describes as a “very exciting ingredient family”. “We saw it both for energy, uplifting, calming, but as well as in the skincare category for internal supplementation.”
McNamara noted a real blur between food and supplement in the Supplements and Natural Health category this year.
“There was lots of playfulness with the different kinds of formats, from powders to gummies and chewables,” says McNamara. “There was also a really beautiful variety of more traditional supplements to address the needs of a broad audience from young to old. It was great to see.”
