Aotearoa’s leading provider of media access services, Able, is farewelling Communications & Engagement Manager Sophie Jones and welcomes Jean Teng in her place.
Able stands as the primary destination in Aotearoa for media access services, including captioning services, subtitling and audio description. Beyond this work, Able has built up a reputation for expertise in the accessibility and media space, bridging the disability sector and the media industry.
In 2020, Jones assumed a newly established role and has since spearheaded a significant phase of expansion for the organisation and its services.
Regrettably for New Zealand, the next two to three years of her career will be spent abroad. She is embarking on a three-month stint working on farms in Japan before relocating to Scotland, where her partner has secured his dream job of contributing to the installation of a wind farm in the North Sea.
For Teng, this appointment at Able marks a homecoming of sorts, as she previously served as a Caption Producer there from 2016 to 2018 while pursuing her film studies at university.
Since then, she has made a name for herself in Aotearoa’s journalism scene, notably during her five-year tenure at Metro. During this time, Teng played a key role in the magazine’s revival after it was independently acquired following Bauer Media’s closure.
Officially holding the title of Food Editor, she contributed both in print and online, as well as working on marketing, commercial initiatives, stakeholder relations management, event planning and execution, and overall business strategy.
Since her departure from Able in 2018, Teng has also lent her writing talents to The Spinoff, National Geographic, and North and South.
“My career has always intersected with storytelling and cultivating relationships with people,” she says. “In my work, I’ve been drawn to amplifying the things that I personally believe in or think are important, whether that’s a very good hole-in-the-wall restaurant, or a theatre show, or a political cause.”
Jones finishes up on Wednesday, October 4th and Teng begins her new role on Monday, October 9th.
