Fair Food new posters are Packed with Purpose

Auckland food rescue charity Fair Food has launched a summer poster campaign, Packed with Purpose.

Partnering with technology and creative studio Daylight, the posters showcase the volume of kai Fair Food rescues from waste every day.

Every month, Fair Food collects approximately 50.7 tonnes of food destined for landfill from the biggest supermarkets and suppliers. As the kai approaches its best-before date, Fair Food volunteers sort, save and send it to community partners to feed New Zealanders in need. Run on the generosity of donors and a volunteer network the organisation has distributed more than 7.5 million meals since 2021.

“Summer is a time for gathering with loved ones and sharing meals, but it’s also when food waste is at its highest. At Fair Food, we believe every piece of kai has value, and through our work, we’re not just rescuing food – we’re nourishing communities and protecting our planet,” says Michelle Blau, Fair Food General Manager.

Showcasing Fair Food’s mission

During the sorting process, volunteers recycle thousands of pieces of food packaging. The idea was simple: repurpose this packaging into collages that demonstrate the sheer volume of kai being rescued and redistributed to those who need it most.

From the stickers found on crates of produce and mass amounts of baked goods through to labels from cans and dairy products – the collaged backgrounds cover a huge range of food. During the art-working process, volunteers recorded the exact weight of each item, calculating the total mass of rescued food. These figures were then presented through big labels pasted on top, with typography outlining Fair Food’s purpose.

ECD Daylight Charlie Godinet says, “We love hands-on craft at Daylight, and we couldn’t think of a better organisation to roll up our sleeves for. Fair Food’s work is truly inspiring, and we’re delighted to help showcase it and celebrate their cause.”

The final collages were then scanned and distributed through the Phantom network of street posters for mass reach. In total, this campaign was made with 2473kg of lovingly rescued food, a powerful representation of the Fair Food mission and one day’s worth of food shared.
