The Spinoff has announced the appointment of journalist and commentator Hayden Donnell to the position of senior writer.
Donnell will join The Spinoff’s award-winning editorial team on September 8 from his position as producer of RNZ‘s Mediawatch. His last day with the national broadcaster is August 28.
Foundational voice
Donnell has been a foundational and recurring voice for The Spinoff. He was one of the platform’s first staff writers, hosted the cult web series Get It To Te Papa and has been a consistent contributing writer over the past decade.
In his new full-time role, Donnell will focus on analysis, commentary and in-depth reporting across politics, media and culture.
“We’re beyond excited to have Hayden officially back in the fold,” says Madeleine Chapman, editor of The Spinoff. “Hayden is one of New Zealand’s sharpest and funniest writers. His ability to cut through the noise, always with a unique sense of humour, is exactly what The Spinoff is about.”
The Spinoff CEO Amber Easby noted the appointment signals a continued investment in high-quality, independent journalism.
“In today’s media landscape, investing in distinctive, trusted voices is the most important thing we can do. Hayden is one of those voices. I know our readers and members will be excited to see what he does next.”
