Māori-owned agency Run is celebrating the 50th anniversary of Te Wiki o te Reo Māori with heitiki designs.
Te Wiki o te Reo Māori runs every year, this year from September 15 to 19.
For the independent creative agency, te reo Māori is part of their everyday. The agency is a specialist in Māori and Pasifika kaupapa, with a distinct indigenous perspective. Many of their clients are Māori and Pasifika organisations, purpose-driven projects and businesses wanting to engage meaningfully with these audiences.
Celebrating wisdom and beauty
Each design draws inspiration from a different whakataukī (proverb) and celebrates the wisdom and beauty of te ao Māori.
Run is posting the designs to its social media channels throughout the week.

The campaign centres on the kīwaha: “Heia tō ihi, heitiki”. This saying encourages Aotearoa to wear and share the heitiki.
The designs will be made into fine art prints and gifted to Te Uru Karaka Newton Central School’s Te Whānau Awahou o Te Aka Pūkāea unit. This is in support of their kaupapa to nurture and grow te reo Māori in the next generation.
Revitalising te reo Māori
Run’s CCO Raymond Otene McKay says: “We bring authenticity to all the mahi we produce, aligning with taha Māori processes and staying true to te ao Māori values.
“This initiative is both a celebration of Te Wiki o te Reo Māori and a way for RUN to tautoko kura, whānau, and the revitalisation of te reo Māori through a creative campaign.”
Run has marked Te Wiki o te Reo Māori in different ways over the years. These include renaming the agency ‘Oma’ (run), and producing language videos for te reo Māori words and phrases.
