Nelson Airport has unveiled a brand refresh, strengthening ties with the local community and celebrating stories that are uniquely Nelson.
With more than 850,000 passengers annually, Nelson is Aotearoa’s largest regional airport by visitor numbers.
Nelson Airport chief executive Brendan Cook says: “The previous brand no longer captured the airport’s connection to place, people and purpose. We needed a bold brand to support the airport and the region’s bold aspirations.”
Stories, landscapes, people
In partnership with brand agency Principals, the goal was to co-create a brand uniquely shaped by Nelson’s stories, landscapes and people.
Through a process involving local cultural advisors, including Hemi Sundgren, Te Ahu Rei, Nelson Airport leadership and the wider community, Principals developed a strategy grounded in today, positioned for the future.
The brand idea symbolises a place where many pathways converge and connect. Meanwhile, the visual identity draws inspiration from the Kuaka (Bar-tailed Godwit) – a migratory bird that makes the longest non-stop flight of any bird, arriving in Nelson from the Arctic each year.
Beyond the visuals
Principals strategy director Tom Sykes says: “The journey of the Kuaka is a fitting metaphor representing the many pathways people take to travel to Nelson, and the calm and restoration they find when they arrive. It’s a natural metaphor for an airport and the region it serves.”
The new brand retains the warmth of the previous identity, reflecting the region’s sunny feel while making it uniquely Nelson. The terminal’s golden light inspired a colour palette that appears in photography and the Kuaka tail motif, a spiral representing journey and return, says Nelson Airport.

Chief executive Cook adds: “This rebrand demonstrates how strategic, culturally grounded design can do more than refresh visuals – it can strengthen regional pride, attract new audiences and future-proof a vital community gateway.
“The Principals team has been a pleasure to work with, and they have truly created a brand that could only have come from Nelson.”
