Director Sam Templeton, who has recently come back to New Zealand after directing for six years in Europe, has joined the roster of boutique production house Supernormal.
“Our team is ecstatic to welcome Sam home to Aotearoa and to Supernormal’s roster. Sam’s hunger, character and charm caught our attention immediately and with a penchant for stylistic visuals and an appetite to grow and evolve his repertoire, it felt like the perfect fit,” says Matt McKenzie, EP at Supernormal.
Templeton is behind 1News’ latest digital brand campaign, developed by TVNZ alongside Supernormal.
“Our main goal was to draw awareness to 1News’ social channels within a younger demographic. We knew the spot would have to be engaging, entertaining, informative and most of all relatable. You know, grab their attention and hold onto it with both hands kinda stuff,” says Templeton.
“We established three scenes which would come across on screen as everyday scenarios but had room for us to play with stylistically. To reel ’em in and keep ’em there, our technical approach had to have a constant feeling of movement so we created some captivating dolly manoeuvres and immersive VFX holograms, à la your wildest sci-fi dreams.”
Speaking further on Sam’s return, McKenzie says: “We’re really excited to see the impact Sam can have in the market this year. He has shown his desire to continuously push the boundaries of his work, drawing influences from fashion, sport, film and street culture to tell bold and striking visual stories across genres.”
