AUCKLAND, Today: This year marks five years of oOh!media New Zealand’s Art in the Hood, a vibrant initiative transforming bus shelters into canvases for young Kiwi artists across Aotearoa.
For 2024, the theme “Nature Taking Over” encouraged primary school students to imagine their neighbourhoods overtaken by nature. Submissions were judged by a panel including Chris Swift, Creative Director at Auckland Transport, and experts from Keep New Zealand Beautiful and Christchurch and Wellington City Councils.
“oOh!media’s ‘Art in the Hood’ initiative exemplifies a community-first approach that empowers our tamariki to use their voice in a creative way,” says Wayne Gazley, Keep New Zealand Beautiful Board Member.
“We really enjoy seeing Art in the Hood brought to life each year, as it allows us to connect in a meaningful way.” – Mark Hundal
This year’s winner, Ruby from Karori Normal School, wowed judges with her vibrant depiction of a community blending harmoniously with nature. Her design will be displayed on Large Format wraps at local bus shelters alongside other finalists’ creations.
“We really enjoy seeing Art in the Hood brought to life each year, as it allows us to connect in a meaningful way,” says Mark Hundal, Head of Commercial at oOh!media New Zealand. “This initiative fosters community pride and gives young people a platform to make a positive difference.”
Ruby’s winning design was unveiled on 12 December 2024 at Karori Normal School’s bus shelter, in a ceremony attended by judges and oOh!media representatives.
Since its inception, Art in the Hood has empowered tamariki to showcase their talents and foster a sense of ownership in their communities.
