Warm Reception

AUCKLAND, Wednesday: Two big winners at The Radio Bureau’s 2020 Orcas, announced yesterday – the Grand Orca went to Stanley St creatives Tim Thach & Brooke Wiley, and the People’s Choice winners – for the second time running – were David Shirley & Melina Fiolitakis from FCB.

Thach and Wiley won for their Rebel Sport campaign Find Your Rhythm. The pair will receive a $ 10,000 cash prize and a $ 10,000 radio campaign.

Stanley St CD Kim Ellison commented: “A deserved win for a delightful and hardworking team.”

Shirley and Fiolitakis won with their Pak’nSave Stickman campaign Savey, picking up a $ 2000 cash prize and a $ 5000 radio campaign.

FCB ECD Leisa Wall said “Peter and I are super proud. We’ll celebrate in true Pak’nSave style with a low-cost party. Woop woop.”

David Shirley said: “It’s nice to know that a really simple idea still resonates with people.

“We had more Orca entries this year than ever before – a true testament to the power of radio even in difficult times.”

“Your ad doesn’t need to be flashy or expensive to make it good. Apparently you don’t even need to pay for a full length spot.”

Media Design School students James McCulloch & Kathryn Prince took top honours in the Student Orca for their mock campaign Voting Choir – aimed at getting young New Zealanders to vote.

Judging was based on four criteria: creativity, execution, effectiveness and innovation.

Representing varied disciplines across the industry, the panel consisted of James Mok (VMLY&R), Bex Radford (BC&F Dentsu), Leisa Wall (FCB), JP Twaalfhoven (Clemenger BBDO) and Dr Matt Mollgaard (AUT).

The Student Orca judging panel consisted of Karen Maurice-O’Leary (Facebook Creative Shop), creative Antony Wilson, and Matt Williams & Freddie Coltart from DDB.

TRB GM Peter Richardson said: “It’s fantastic to hear the personality of New Zealand brands coming to life in these ads.

“We had more Orca entries this year than ever before – a true testament to the power of radio even in difficult times.”
