DUKE turns orange for the election

TVNZ DUKE will experience a full-scale takeover this Saturday, in a bid to get more Kiwis turning out to vote.

Instead of seeing The Simpsons, Top Gear or Spiky Gold Hunters on DUKE during voting hours, viewers tuning in this Election Day will be treated to a non-stop loop of ‘Orange Guy’.

The Electoral Commission’s ‘Orange Guy’ will be busy goading viewers into getting up off the couch to make their voices heard. ‘Orange Guy’ will be seen on screen going about his daily activities with his trusty Pup in tow. His focus throughout will be clear – prodding and poking DUKE’s audience to participate in the General Election and Referendums.

This is the first time a TVNZ channel has been taken over on Election Day. The regular schedule will be suspended from 9am when voting opens and normal programming will resume at 5pm, shortly before voting officially closes.

TVNZ’s GM of Partnerships, Aaron Dawson says: “DUKE reaches young, highly engaged viewers and their opinions matter. We think audiences will enjoy this incredibly amusing and equally important interlude.”

Suzanne Knight, Manager of Communications and Education at the Electoral Commission adds: “We’re really excited to partner with DUKE on election day to remind young voters that it’s their last chance to vote in the election and referendums.”

Paul Shale, CEO of FCB NZ says: “FCB are thrilled to help TVNZ and the Electoral Commission partner to get more Kiwis voting this year than ever before, including making sure that every single DUKE viewer gets out to vote with this TVNZ-first ‘Orange Guy and Pup’ Election Day takeover.”

TVNZ and the Electoral Commission also teamed up to share stories and messages on 1 NEWS Weather, Seven SharpBreakfast and Re:.
