Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga unveils website refresh by Tribal Worldwide

Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga’s website has a new look thanks to the work of Tribal Worldwide, offering an immersive experience for visitors seeking information on Aotearoa New Zealand’s cultural heritage.

The new website features a user-friendly design, allowing information to be accessed more easily – both functionally and lingually.

A key focus for the website was elevating Māori heritage, and in its development Tribal spoke directly to Kāhui Māori – incorporating workshops, data analysis, surveys, and interviews into the process. Indigenous creative agency RUN also played a key part in building the strategy of the Heritage New Zealand website through a te ao Māori lens.

In the new website, Māori design is integrated throughout, with the home page centered around a pou, inspiring the feeling of a whare and village. Elements that represent whakairo (carving) & Māori painting arts have been incorporated by artist and Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga Kaihautū Dean Whiting who was instrumental in developing the aesthetic of the website.

Hadyn Kerr, Executive Creative Director at Tribal says it has been a privilege to launch a website that connects people and promotes a cultural understanding of Aotearoa.

“With an important focus of meeting the needs of iwi and hapū, we ensured they were central to the experience. The process has championed a sense of hapori (community) throughout and has especially elevating the use of te reo Māori,” says Kerr.

With simplified navigation visitors can interact seamlessly with the website and its intuitive storytelling, which works to inspire exploration across Aotearoa. The refresh provides a much better experience of the New Zealand Heritage List/Rārangi Kōrero, simplifies all application processes for users and also includes a glossary of te reo Māori terms, making it easier for all visitors to understand and appreciate te reo Māori.

Roxane Gajadhar, Director Organisational Development at Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga is thrilled that the new platform will help provide detailed information and inspire visitors to learn more about our cultural heritage.

“We are committed to preserving and promoting Aotearoa New Zealand’s rich cultural heritage, and a refreshed website is such an important tool in helping elevate and ensure accessibility to our resources,” says Gajadhar.
