Young journalists to have their say on NZ’s media landscape

Industry leaders are turning to their younger colleagues to share thoughts and views on the future of the Kiwi media landscape which has been full of turmoil since the start of the year.

It’s an industry that has suffered continuous blows, from the closure of Newshub to significant cuts at TVNZ to the folding of Stuff’s Sunday News.

In a panel discussion next week, Ella Stewart (RNZ), Karanama Ruru (Stuff), Lyric Waiwiri-Smith (The Spinoff) and Sherry Zhang (Freelance), will discuss the state of the industry, what it means for them at the start of their journalism careers and where they would like to see change.

The panel session, run by the Public Relations Institute of New Zealand (PRINZ) and independent communications agency One Plus One, will be moderated by James Tapp.

“Our media industry is at a critical point in its history with every development having a flow-on effect for the rest of society – and the views of our young journalists are essential to help inform and better understand the future of the fourth estate here in Aotearoa,” says Tapp, a Senior Account Executive at One Plus One.

The panellists will also discuss other key topics including the impact of social media, and rebuilding public trust before breaking for an interactive Q+A with the audience.

PRINZ CEO Susanne Martin says now is the time for everyone’s voices to be heard and for us all to reflect on the role we play in the media landscape.

“The relationships our members enjoy with media organisations work best when they’re symbiotic, and with our media landscape currently experiencing a period of rapid change, we have a responsibility to foster constructive discussions about its future.”

The panel session will be held on July 17 from 5.30pm – 7.30pm
