All you need to know for this weekend’s attempt at the world’s largest haka

Are you ready, Aotearoa? It is just two sleeps to go until the official Guinness World Records title attempt to reclaim the record for the world’s largest haka at New Zealand’s national stadium, Eden Park, this Sunday, September 29.

The current record is held by 4,028 men and women, performed 10 years ago in France. This new attempt will be officially adjudicated by Guinness World Records, with 10,000 participant tickets available to perform Aotearoa’s best-known haka Ka Mate, composed by Te Rauparaha, chief of Ngāti Toa Rangatira and spectator tickets available to watch this historic family-friendly event.

The nation-building occasion is part of the 20th-anniversary celebrations of the Raukatauri Music Therapy Trust, co-founded by Dame Hinewehi and named after her daughter Hineraukatauri. The funds raised will enable the Trust to continue delivering life-changing music therapy to those who need it most and the event is being staged with the support of multiple agencies and sponsors standing united to reclaim the record.

The event will be broadcast live on Māori TV and Māori+.

Tātaki Auckland Unlimited is proud to be hosting this iconic event in Tāmaki Makaurau and support this unique celebration of Māori culture alongside other key partners including The Eden Park Trust, One New Zealand, Go Media, Te Taura Whiri i Te Reo Māori, Aktive and Les Mills.

Get ready to haka

To make sure everyone participating performs Ka Mate authentically and accurately all participants have access to a series of training videos to learn how to perform Ka Mate, including the differences for tāne (men) and wāhine (women).  The training videos are provided as part of your ticket price.

Tickets still available for both participants and spectators

Tickets to participate in and spectate this family friendly event and record attempt are on sale now at $ 10 per adult, $ 5 for concessions. Get your tickets www.hakarecord.co.nz. While event organisers encourage you to purchase tickets in advance to avoid disappointment, ticket sales will still be available on the day for both participants (up to 10,000) and spectators, with participants asked to be at Eden Park by 5pm latest for registration. The event will begin at 6pm where the first performer will take the stage.

Tickets include free public transport to the event, with AT providing free bus transport to Eden Park as part of its regular service. Please refer to bus timetables and maps for more information. Road closures and traffic management plans will be in place on Sunday around Eden Park, please allow plenty of time to get to Eden Park.

Food and beverage is available for purchase at Eden Park – no outside food or drinks can be taken into the stdium.

Please note that children under the age of 5 will not be allowed to participate in the haka attempt or be present in the attempt area.
