Are Media farewells Virginia Larson from Kia Ora magazine

Virginia Larson is to step down from her role as editor of Air New Zealand’s inflight magazine, Kia Ora.

Kia Ora’s publisher Are Media says Larson has led Kia Ora with distinction, further elevating the magazine into a trusted and inspiring voice that represents Aotearoa New Zealand to Kiwis and visitors alike. She will remain involved with Kia Ora as a freelance contributor.

Throughout her tenure, Larson has overseen the evolution of the title’s editorial direction, delivering high-quality storytelling that celebrates New Zealand’s people, places and culture for millions of travellers each year.

An enormous privilege

Reflecting on her decision, she says: “Editing Kia Ora has been an enormous privilege. It’s a magazine that carries New Zealand’s stories to the world, and I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved with such a talented team. Stepping away from the editorship feels like the right time, while still allowing me to stay involved with a title I care deeply about.”

She adds: “Moving into a freelance role gives me the opportunity to focus on specific projects, while continuing to contribute to Kia Ora and work alongside the people who make it such a special publication.”

Outstanding editor and kaitiaki

Are Media General Manager Stuart Dick acknowledges Larson’s ongoing contribution and the value of retaining her editorial expertise.

“Virginia has been an outstanding editor and kaitiaki of the Kia Ora brand,” says Dick. “Her editorial leadership, judgement and collaborative approach have been instrumental in the magazine’s success. We’re delighted that Virginia will continue working with us in a freelance capacity and look forward to her ongoing contribution to Kia Ora.”

Larson will remain involved during the recruitment for a new editor to ensure continuity and a smooth handover. Further announcements regarding the future editorship of Kia Ora will be made in due course.
