AUCKLAND, Today: KFC is bringing back the bun-free beast that refuses to behave, with the Double Down returning nationwide alongside a distinctly messy new sidekick: gravy.
To mark the comeback, KFC Sylvia Park is installing New Zealand’s first gravy tap, allowing customers to pour the Colonel’s gravy themselves.
Naturally, dipping is encouraged. Double dipping is not only tolerated, but practically part of the brief. The Original Double Down replaces the traditional bun with two Secret Recipe Fillets, stacked with bacon, cheese and the Colonel’s Special Sauce.
For those wanting a little more fire, the Supercharged Double Down is also returning, with two Zinger Fillets, bacon, cheese and KFC’s Supercharged sauce.
KFC Marketing Director Leanne Too says the cult favourite tends to make plenty of noise whenever it disappears.
It’s the product that broke the rules, so this year we wanted its comeback to match that energy – by making it socially acceptable to double dip into gravy.” – Leanne Too, Marketing Director, KFC
“The Double Down has a cult following in New Zealand, and every time it’s off the menu, we hear about it. It’s the product that broke the rules, so this year we wanted its comeback to match that energy – by making it socially acceptable to double dip into gravy.”
The Sylvia Park gravy tap will run from Tuesday, 14 July until Friday, 17 July.
Customers can pour their own gravy between 11am and 2pm, then again from 5pm until 7pm each day.
Anyone unable to make the gravy pilgrimage can still get involved, with an optional side of gravy available alongside every Double Down purchased nationwide while stocks last.
The Double Down with gravy launches in-store, online and through delivery nationwide from Tuesday, 14 July for $ 15.99.
The burger is also available without gravy for $ 12.99.
