In a world where nearly everyone is always online, there is no offline.

Reheko! Media Works and Ngāti Whātua Ōrakei take te Reo to the streets

It’s te Reo Māori week and everyone is getting involved. MediaWorks, Ngāti Whātua Ōrakei, and QMS have come together to bring a digital campaign and radio competition to Tāmaki Makaurau with the aim of integrating the language into everyday life.

The campaign will run from 14 to 20 September, with te Reo Māori displayed across sites in the high traffic areas of Tāmaki and a sponsored week-long on-air and social media competition on Mai FM.

The creative was run and brought to life by David Harriman of Ngāti Whātua Ōrakei.

Each day of the week the billboard takeover will display a  ‘Kupu o te rā’ (phrase of the day), which can be submitted to Mai FM in the chance to win a cash prize.

Te Kurataiaho Kapea, general manager Toi Whātua (Culture) for Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei Whai Maia, says the campaign is important to the hapū who want to see a bigger presence of te Reo Māori and culture across Tāmaki.

“As the Ahi Kaa of Tāmaki, we are proud and honoured to drive initiatives that will celebrate, promote, revitalise, and encourage te Reo in Tāmaki. We want to see te Reo Māori become an integral part of our city’s identity,” says Kapea.

Media Works radio director of content, Leon Wratt, says Media Works were excited to work with Ngāti Whātua Ōrakei to create a campaign that encompasses the radio and outdoor brands while creating a positive environment for using te Reo.

“Mai FM has a significant listener base in Tāmaki Makaurau and it is the perfect fit to encourage everyone to give te Reo a go, we hope that our listeners embrace this,” says Wratt.

Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei is also providing free online Te Reo Māori for Business throughout the month.
