Why a podcast company working with big US names likes to hire Kiwis

Supermix is a podcast production agency that works with some of the biggest names in tech media, who are primarily based in America. But co-founder Xavier English thinks Kiwis like new hire Jess Strick are best for delivering this work.

English explained two key advantages in hiring Kiwis for these roles: “Firstly, Kiwis are willing to get stuck in at the immense level of detail required for premium content – they have a ‘no job too big or small’ attitude. Second, Kiwis connect with our mission to use podcasts to bring the best tech playbooks to the world. Being so far away from Silicon Valley, many Kiwis – like myself – have personal experience relying on podcasts to access the world’s best tech/startup lessons.”

‘Killer combo’

English said Strick embodies both of these characteristics and more, adding: “She is a natural-born writer with a nose for good content and what makes brands unique. These skills are a killer combo for a Supermix content lead, who needs to repackage and repurpose content while staying true to its original brand and essence.”

Strick will be joining the team after a three-and-a-half-year stint at health and safety software company ecoPortal. She says: “Supermix is an incredibly inspiring place to work. I get to listen to the best podcasts all day and then help spread their ideas to people around the world.”

Supermix customers include folks like Lenny Rachitsky, a top 10 tech podcaster with 700k+ Substack newsletter subscribers, and First Round Capital, a venture capital firm that wrote some of the first cheques into Uber, Notion and Square. It has produced podcasts with guests such as co-founder and CEO of Airbnb Brian Chesky, Canva co-founder Cam Adams and Netflix CTO Elizabeth Stone.

Xavier added one “cherry on top” for having Kiwis working with American clients was the time difference: “They rave about being able to agree on next steps before they sleep in America, have us work on them ‘overnight’ (during New Zealand’s day) and wake up to everything complete – like magic.”
