Are Media has announced an internal editorial move for New Zealand Woman’s Weekly.
Editor Marilynn McLachlan is stepping into the new role of lifestyle editor for the brand.
McLachlan has led New Zealand Woman’s Weekly since its relaunch in late 2020 under Are Media’s ownership, overseeing a period of growth and strength for the much-loved title. Over her time, she has evolved and diversified the editorial offering, delivered exceptional exclusives, produced impressive commercial results and developed a talented team.
In her new role, McLachlan will immerse herself in the direction, development and creation of lifestyle content across New Zealand Woman’s Weekly — an area that has long been her editorial passion.
Timing is right
While moving on from the editorship was not an easy decision, McLachlan believes the timing is right for her personally. She continues her contribution, skill and expertise to the brand’s ongoing success in a different and meaningful way.
“New Zealand Woman’s Weekly has my heart — the brand, the team and, most importantly, the readers,” says McLachlan. “Stepping away from the editorship was a deeply considered decision and not one I made lightly. But this role allows me to still create and deliver inspirational content for hundreds of thousands of Kiwis and remain a significant part of a title I love and a company I believe in.”
She adds: “I’m incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved since relaunching the Weekly. It feels like the right moment for someone else to lead the team forward, and for me to support that success in another way.”
An ‘outstanding leader’
Are Media general manager Stuart Dick says the decision reflects both McLachlan’s strengths and Are Media’s commitment to retaining and nurturing editorial talent across its portfolio.
“Marilynn is an outstanding editorial leader who has played a pivotal role in the success of New Zealand Woman’s Weekly across all platforms over the past five years,” says Dick. “We have enormous respect for her talent, her leadership and her contribution to the brand and the wider company.
“We were very keen to support Marilynn in this move. Her passion for lifestyle content, combined with her deep understanding of the Weekly and its audience, makes this a natural evolution of her role. We see a long and exciting future for Marilynn within Are Media and our diverse publishing portfolio.”
Recruitment for a new editor of New Zealand Woman’s Weekly has commenced. McLachlan will remain in the role until her successor has been onboarded following a transition period.
