Phantom now carbon-zero certified

AUCKLAND, Today: Street poster network Phantom Billstickers has taken a solid step towards decarbonising its operations. Toitū Envirocare has completed a comprehensive audit of its operations that began in July 2021.

Phantom ceo Robin McDonnell said: The company now has a set of rigorous benchmarks to mark its progress towards carbon neutrality.

“The Toitū process measured all aspects of Phantom’s environmental impact, from taxi rides to paper consumption. The result is a carbon audit with a high degree of scientific certainty.

“This will inform the company’s strategies while it uses the science-based tools provided by Toitū to drive emissions down, year on year.

“The time for greenwashing in the out-of-home advertising industry is over.

“When Phantom started out 40 years ago, street posters were pretty much organic by default – cheap paper, printers’ ink and flour-and-water glue were our key inputs.

“Times have changed. Now there are transport emissions, solvents, paper usage and a tonne of organisational inputs to be calculated. It’s hard to measure their extent, let alone their impact. So we turned to the experts at Toitū.

“The process starts from a simple truism: What is measured can be managed. The next step is to implement the tools and programmes provided by Toitū – and open up the process up to outside eyes.

“ … and hold the rest of the OOH sector to account, too.”

“It’s important to ensure rigorous, independent scrutiny as marketers start to look more closely at the environmental impact of their activities.

“You can check Phantom’s carbon emissions on Toitū – it’s a matter of public record. Hold us to account as we move towards our ultimate goal of being carbon positive over the coming months and years.

“And hold the rest of the OOH sector to account, too.”

About Toitū
The Toitū Carbon Reduce and Carbon Zero programmes are accredited by the Joint Accreditation System of Australia and New Zealand (JAS-ANZ) and were the world’s first to be accredited under ISO 14065.

40 free posters for Music Month gigs
McDonnell: “Phantom Billstickers are putting their money where their mouth is. Every band or performer who plays anywhere in Aotearoa during May is entitled to 40 free A3 posters in Phantom’s street poster network to boost their audience.

The posters will be printed for free and placed in Phantom’s purple frames to let music lovers know what’s on.

“NZ Music Month is the industry’s chance to showcase its talent. We want to see venues packed with fans while bands remind them that nothing beats live music.

“It’s why we got into the poster business in the first place.”

“Live music is why we got into the poster business in the first place.”

“Not uncoincidentally, 2022 marks 40 years since Phantom Billstickers pasted up its very first street poster.

“The first Phantom campaign was to help fill a Christchurch venue for a Kiwi band, and we’ve never stopped since.

“We reckon NZ Music Month in 2022 provides the perfect opportunity to celebrate our 40th birthday.

“The Phantom offer is straightforward. If you’re planning a gig during May, hit us up for 40 free posters. You’ll need to include the NZ Music Month and Phantom Billstickers logos on your artwork. Then all you have to do is book your venue and give us a call.

Speaking for the NZ Music Commission, Rodney Fisher says the initiative will help all kinds of acts reach new audiences and widen their appeal.

“Physical posters on the street are a great way to level up your presence, and this initiative from the legendary Phantom Billstickers is a chance to get your show repped on the street as part of NZ Music Month.”
